How To Get Oil In Ark Ragnarok

As much asArk: Survival Evolved is a game about collecting dinosaurs, it is also a game about collecting and managing resources. Often, your tools and dinos will aid in your mission to stockpile said resources, but first, you need to know where to look. In this guide, we will be covering everything you need to know about oil, one of the most precious and rare resources inArk,including where to find it, what it's for, and how to collect it.

What Is Oil Used For?

Oil is as versatile as it valuable inArk, unfortunately that means it is one of the more difficult resources to come by. Typically, oil is thought to be a mid-to-late game resource and though you may need some here and there for the odd item, such as propellant for your flamethrower or the spray painter, your first hint that collecting oil is about to become part of your daily routine is at level 49 when you unlock the electrical generator.

The electrical generator opens up a world of efficiency improving items and many new weapons and tools that will aid you significantly. Refrigerators, turrets, elevators, lampposts, air conditioners, keypads, and the chemistry bench all run off of the generator. The generator runs exclusively on gasoline, at a rate of 1 unit every 30 minutes, and gasoline is made by combine oil and hide in a forge. So, to run your generator for 24 hours, you will need to gather at least 48 oil to make enough gasoline.

How Important Is Oil?

Powering your base isn't the only use for oil, though. It is also a main ingredient in re-fertilizer, essential items used to grow crops efficiently. Since many crops are used to create dino kibble, which helps you dinos, it is clear that oil is extremely important inArk.

Oil is also part of the crafting cost for all of the industrial tier workbenches, including the industrial forge, industrial grill, and fabricator. You will begin unlocking these benches around level 50. These benches not only cost a small fortune of oil to craft (the industrial forge, for example, costs 400 oil), but each one will require its own supply of gasoline independent of your generator, so it is a good idea to start collecting oil as soon as possible.

Like most resources inArk, oil can be found from many different sources. An adventurous player may wish to hunt and forage for oil, while a wise farmer may instead prefer to generate oil over time using tamed creatures. Both options are equally viable, and we will detail precisely how to accomplish each one.

How To Find Oil

Oil can be found in a wide variety of ways inArk depending on how much you need, how much time you have, which map you are playing on, and how far you have advanced in the game. Understanding your position in the world and what tools/locations you have access to will inform how you set about finding oil.

In the early game, when you only need a small amount of oil to craft some propellant or to turn your meat into jerky, your best bet for finding oil is by killing Trilobites. Trilobites are small sea creatures that skim the bottom of shallow lakes and rivers. They are easily mistaken for rocks but are almost always found in groups. Killing them will yield a small amount of oil, but make sure you have a plan of attack: once you kill one Trilobite, the others in the area will flee, making it difficult to efficiently kill them all.

Once you have better armor, a decent water dino, and a sufficient amount of courage, the next best method for collecting oil is to scour the river beds and ocean floor for black nodes. This, however, is a risky method, as some of the games most dangerous creatures lurk in the water. It is recommended that you tame an especially high-speed water mount if you plan to gather oil this way. As a newbie, Ichthyosaurus will be your best bet, as they are both incredibly fast and easy to tame (they prefer Dodo Kibble). However, keep in mind they have no offensive capabilities. It is also recommended that you consume Lazarus Chowder in order to hold your breath long enough to mine deeper water.

If nautical nonsense is not something you wish, then your other option for gathering oil is to traverse the snow biome in search of black nodes. Remember to dress for the weather and wear furs to protect yourself from the extreme cold. It is also recommended that you bring an Ankylosaurus in order to mine as quickly as possible. The snow comes with its own dangers - for example, the many Dire Wolves and Argentavis that inhabit the area - so underwater nodes might still be your best bet.

Once you are established, have built your gas-guzzling benches and are in more of a routine mode, you may decide it's time for a more consistent, passive method for collecting oil. There are several oil producing methods available to you.

How To Produce Oil

Your best option for producing your own oil is to tame a couple of Dung Beetles. These can be found in the caves and tamed by feeding their feces. If Dung Beetles are left on wander, they will produce oil and fertilizer, so you will need to build a small pen for them to wander into.

Alternatively, you can tame a Basilosaurus. These sea monsters also passively produce oil, but since they are very tough beasts, this is more of a late-game option.  Hesperonis eggs can be turned into oil by placing them in a cooking pot, so if you already have a substantial egg farm going, this might be an option. However, the yield is quite small, so it is not recommended.

Hopefully, this guide has provided you with all of the information you need to find and collect oil.  It is an extremely valuable resource inArk: Survival Evolved,so the sooner you can start stockpiling it, the better.
